what we believe

We believe in the infallibility and inerrancy of the entire Bible, which is the Word of God.

With Christians everywhere, we worship the only true God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—who is both one essence and three persons. We believe that Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God, and is God, part of the Triune God.

Jesus Christ is both truly God and truly human. He was with the Father before time began, was incarnated as human, lived a completely sinless life. He was crucified, died and was buried. Three days later he rose bodily from the grave, and was seen by hundreds of people. Jesus, who was sent from the Father, has now ascended to the Father in His resurrected body and remains truly human and alive.

We believe that Jesus Christ will return to Earth in power and glory. At His second coming, Jesus will return for His own and establish His glorious kingdom where love and justice will reign.

Salvation is the gift of God through grace, and cannot be obtained by works – Salvation is through faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ.  ‘Grace alone, Faith alone, Christ alone, Scripture alone and all things to the Glory of God’. (Martin Luther)

We believe that the Commandments are not just for the ancient Hebrews, but are to be the guide for our lives, as well.  True faith in Jesus Christ changes our hearts, and the Christian life should increasingly exhibit the following practices:

1. Worship God alone, living all of life to His glory, renouncing all idolatry and all inordinate loves that might lead us to trust in any other help;

2. Worship God in humility, being reticent in either describing or picturing God, recognizing that right worship is best supported not by our own innovative practices but through the living preaching of the Word and the faithful administration of the Sacraments;

3. Eliminate from both speech and thought any blasphemy, irreverence, or impurity;

4. Observe the Sabbath as a day of worship and rest, being faithful in gathering with the people of God;

5. Give honor toward those set in authority over us and practice mutual submission within the community of the church;

6. Eradicate a spirit of anger, resentment, callousness, violence, or bitterness, and instead cultivate a spirit of gentleness, kindness, peace, and love; recognize and honor the image of God in every human being from conception to natural death.

7. Maintain chastity in thought and deed, being faithful within the covenant of marriage between a man and a woman as established by God at the creation or embracing a celibate life as established by Jesus in the new covenant;

8. Practice right stewardship of the goods we have been given, showing charity to those in need and offering generous support of the Church and its ministries;

9. Pursue truth, even when such pursuit is costly, and defend truth when it is challenged, recognizing that truth is in order to goodness and that its preservation matters;

10. Resist the pull of envy, greed, and acquisition, and instead cultivate a spirit of contentment with the gifts God has given us. (Essential Tenets from the ECO Constitution)

We affirm the historic Christian faith as described by the written confessional statements that guide and interpret Scripture for the church. These confessional statements include the: Nicene Creed, Apostles Creed, Scots Confession, Heidelberg Catechism, Second Helvetic Confession, Westminster Confession of Faith, Shorter Catechism, Larger Catechism, and Barmen Declaration.

Vision

Lead the people of Jacksonville into a transforming relationship with Jesus Christ and into an authentic faith community.

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." Matthew 28:19-20 "By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." John 13:35

Mission

Grow people into fully devoted spiritually mature followers of Christ. This will happen through learning, belonging, praying, worshiping, and serving. "He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ." Colossians 1:28

"He has shown you, 0 mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." Micah 6:8

Values

A Jesus-Centered Church: Above all, we are a church that seeks to keep Jesus Christ at the center of all we do and say. In Christ we find our life, health, vision, and strength. 2 Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 2:20; Mark 12:30

Life Rooted In Scripture: We believe the Bible is God's Word to us and our basis for understanding who God is and how we are to live lives fully oriented around Him. Matthew 4:4; 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Relationships

Relationships Formed In Community: We value living lives in relationship with each other. We believe Christian community is a necessary context in which spiritual formation occurs. John 13:35; Hebrews 10:24-25

Missional Centrality: We believe that the Church was created by God and empowered by the Holy Spirit for the benefit of the entire world, including those not in the Church. We therefore value evangelism, missions of compassion, and working toward justice in word and deed. Micah 6:8; Ezekiel 36:26-27; Matthew 25:34-40; James 1:27
